For more than a decade, Cody Remington has been involved in the commercial drone industry, working in the field with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and manufacturing different types of aircrafts. After years of working with commercially available fixed wing drone solutions that left much to be desired, Remington founded Baam.Tech in 2016 to make drone surveying easy and reliable. 

“I was working with a few companies back then and working with foam aircrafts that were slow, not reliable in wind and resulted in a lot of projects getting canceled,” Remington remembers. “Then there was a second class of fixed-wing drone solutions that were higher performance and could fly in the wind, but they need a large landing area, so it was impossible to find good sites.”Baam Tech info box

Frustrated with the available UAV options for commercial surveyors, Remington developed Baam.Tech’s Futura fixed-wing aircraft. “My goal is to make drone surveying easier and more reliable so there’s less cancellation of projects, more fields that will work and less time spent out in the field to survey the data,” he says. “Futura is the most efficient, longest flying fixed wing aircraft in its class.”

Futura’s distinctive oblique camera system delivers the best data available in the market today, Remington says. The aircraft uses a 42mp Sony A7R ii at an oblique angle to capture more accurate 3-D models, which allows for better vegetation and improvement extraction. It can also withstand and fly in winds up to 40 mph while maintaining blur-free imagery. 

Baam.Tech designed Futura to be easily launched by hand and land in a 25-meter area by coming in at a very steep landing angle, which allows the aircraft to land in small spaces surrounded by trees. “This has never been seen by fixed wing aircrafts until now,” Remington says. “Futura opens up the locations and weather conditions you can fly in and spend less time in the field.”

Game-Changing Innovation

In September, Baam.Tech launched its latest product, a post-processed kinematic (PPK) GPS multi-constellation system, upgrading the DJI Phantom, Futura and all other aircraft. Its PPK GPS system provides higher accuracy, eliminates the need for numerous ground control points and Baam.Tech is offering this system at a significantly lower price than its competition.

“Those systems have been incredibly expensive, usually upwards of $5,000,” Remington notes. “We came out with our multi-constellation GPS for $2,500 installed in the aircraft, which is a significantly lower price and it’s a higher quality product. There have been major innovations in the world of GPS. The Trimble’s are now an outdated system, as far as pricing goes. There are newer GPS manufacturers coming onboard that offer higher-quality systems at lower price points, making it work for the commercial drone industry.”

The main benefits of Baam.Tech’s PPK GPS is its ability to eliminate the need for ground control points. Ground control points are marked with an X and tied in during data processing to georeferenced images from a project and convert ground coordinates of the points to real world locations. 

“Without PPK, you need ground control points every 200 meters, so on a 1,000-acre project, you need 50 to 75 control points,” Remington explains. “That takes about two days to survey and is a lot of ground work. With our PPK GPS system, you need a couple ground points, about four on a 1,000-acre project, which you can get done in about 30 minutes and fly the project within an hour or two rather than two days.”

Because Baam.Tech’s PPK GPS has GPS L1/L2 and GLONASS G1/G2, BeiDou B1/B2, Galileo E1/E5b and SBAS constellations enabled, the company is able ensure higher-quality data as well as increased accuracy and integrity. As the commercial drone industry continues to evolve, Baam.Tech expects to see major innovations in the future in terms of data processing. “It will become more automated and easier for customers to get topographic maps of what they are trying to create with less errors and human work,” Remington adds. 

Baam.Tech’s PPK GPS is an interchangeable system that slides onto the multiple aircraft and ground-based rovers, requiring minimal amount of work to get the project done and has minimal impact on the price. “We are leading the charge in terms of price and quality with PPK GPS,” Remington says. “To date, typically a surveyor would need a drone, a $40,000 GPS system to get the control points and 3-plus days to complete a 1,000-acre project. Now they only need our interchangeable $2,500 PPK GPS, just one system for both ground surveying and the aircraft PPK GPS, and can get a 1,000-acre project done in half a day.”

Moving forward, Baam.Tech expects price points to continue to be reduced on the field side and new features will be developed to further reduce field time and make drone surveying easier to do. “A lot of our customers have used other drones and realized those systems just don’t work for their project,” Remington says. “They are happy with our user-friendliness and performance. Our customers are large-scale commercial surveying companies who are incredibly happy with Futura and my main goal with our PPK GPS was to reduce the price and make it easier to survey.”
