Turner has an extensive presence in many market segments. These include green building, data centers, healthcare, pharmaceutical and biotechnology, industrial and manufacturing, public assembly, sports, transportation, hospitality and aviation.

Engineering News-Record has Turner rated as the No. 1 leading general contractor in the U.S.,” Vice President and Construction Executive David Duffy says. “It also has Turner Construction Company No. 1 in general building, healthcare, commercial offices, sports complexes, education facilities, entertainment and casinos.”

Known for building the world’s most challenging projects and operating with honesty, integrity and innovation, Turner is looking to grow its reach in target markets. Utilizing its proven record, partner relationships and large national presence, Turner works to demonstrate its team approach with all stakeholders on every project, understanding and focusing on each client’s definition of success.

Serving Veterans

Among the projects Turner is working on in the Midwest is the construction of the VA Denver Replacement Medical Center Facility for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Turner has teamed up with Kiewit Building Group on a joint venture to complete the project. The original award date for preconstruction services was Aug. 31, 2010. A contract option for the renovation of the Clinic Building South structure as well as the demolition of other existing structures was issued on April 8, 2011. The balance of the project was awarded as a contract option on Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, 2011.

Both companies have extensive general histories and specific healthcare industry experience. Kiewit is one of the largest construction organizations in North America, and it has a proven track record of delivering large and challenging healthcare projects on time and within budget. Turner is a leader in the healthcare construction market, providing solutions in technology, strategic sourcing, supply chain management and facility support services. Recognized as the leading healthcare builder in the U.S., Turner delivers more than 125 healthcare projects each year.

“We are the top healthcare builder in the country,” Duffy says. “We understand federal contracts, have great design assist capabilities and a strong estimating team, and we have local market relationships and a national reach with staff and subcontractors.”

The project will replace the Denver Medical Center for the Eastern Colorado Health Care System, and it is being constructed at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colo. With an estimated construction cost of $1.3 billion, the VA Denver Replacement Medical Center Facility project will span 2.3 million square feet. This includes 1.4 million square feet of occupied space, consisting of three clinic buildings, two inpatient building, a diagnostic and treatment building, a research building, an energy center, three parking structures, a concourse/connecting building, onsite and off-site civil work, and a 1.5 million gallon water storage tank.

“This is a huge project, which will create a new, state-of-the-art regional replacement VA hospital,” Duffy says. “It includes a combination of architectural precast and curtain wall throughout the project.”

Coordinated Effort

Considering the vast size of the project, it is not surprising that many companies are working with Turner and Kiewit on this massive undertaking. Dozens of subcontractors are participating on the project, and extensive planning has gone in to making sure everyone is pushing in the right direction.

“The project has been broken down to eight focused building teams,” Duffy says. “There is global and cross-campus leadership with central leadership, bringing all together. We are engaging in constant communication, group logistic planning and monthly global schedule analysis, and we are working with the client to ensure timely decisions.”

Some of the biggest challenges on the project include communication, safety and system coordination. To ensure that everyone is focused on the project’s mission and direction, constant communication with all stakeholders is key. Keeping everyone safe daily is accomplished by communicating daily activities and planning the work together, while coordination of all systems is being handled through BIM and focus groups.

So far, the project is moving forward well. Turner is looking forward to working with its partners to deliver a state-of-the-art healthcare facility to serve the needs of our nation’s much deserving veterans. It understands that projects of this magnitude do not get completed without trust amongst all stakeholders, and it is looking forward to taking lessons from this project and applying them to future opportunities.

Although much has changed for Turner and the world around it since its inception in 1902, the company believes the foundation it has in place will serve it well on the VA Denver Replacement Medical Center Facility and beyond. The company will continue to invest in leading-edge technology, updating and refining its processes, while adapting to the needs of its markets. Having demonstrated many times that it can rise to meet many challenges, Turner believes a bright future awaits.

“Turner Construction Company’s reputation in the market place always has been and will continue to be the best,” Duffy says. “As we move forward, we will focus on attracting future generations to the construction industry as we continue to be innovative and keep our competitive edge.”
